Protected Areas

Dr. Alan Rabinowitz training Burmese protected area staff in wildlife research techniquesWhile long-term conservation must deal with the human-dominated landscape, fully protected areas remain the crucial core units of conservation.  Throughout its existence, WCS field scientists have played a key role in identifying, designating, and helping manage many of the world's most important protected wild lands. 

The purpose of this program, together with exploration and survey activities, is to set up new protected areas, help implement the long-term planning and management of these areas, and look at "best practices" in regard to the success or failure of protected areas.
